Syngenta responds to Oct. 6 report, “A worldwide survey of neonicotinoids in honey”

Detection of a substance is different from risk. Advances in technology can now detect infinitesimal amounts previously unmeasurable. The residues reported in this study are miniscule and well below amounts relating to human safety, which study authors clearly acknowledge. Further, the residues detected are 50 times lower than what could cause possible effects on bees, based on a recently published review by IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services).
Neonicotinoids are rigorously tested before going to market to ensure they can be used safely and effectively. In the case of Syngenta’s neonicotinoid, thiamethoxam, more than 1,600 studies have been conducted in support of its safe use, including humans, wildlife and the environment.
