Plant phenotyping specialist LemnaTec has announced a new digital imaging system, a variant of the successful Scanalyzer PL, that can provide side view, as well as top view, images.
The Scanalyzer PL has been in production for many years and is widely used, with a single top-mounted camera, by scientists across the world. This new version allows greater flexibility for smaller scale phenotyping facilities, at an affordable price.
The first system was purchased by the Colegio de Postgraduados Campus Montecillo, an internationally recognized public institution of higher education located in Mexico. Dr. Daniel Padilla Chacón headed up the project.
“We were looking for a system to help our research students generate reliable data to support their work here”, says Dr Padilla. “Dr. Tino Dornbusch from LemnaTec delivered an intensive one week training course which we found to be very helpful and informative and our students are now very positive about the new Scanalyzer”.
The Scanalyzer is equipped with high-quality industrial cameras and can accommodate plants of up to 30x30x30 cm as well as individual standard microtiter plates. This extraordinary flexibility is achieved by incorporating of a programmable zoom lens.
“Although initially we found the software to be complicated, now we are designing experiments, loading images and performing experiments with models such as common bean, Arabidopsis and corn plants. In the future, we will use this platform for other studies such as root development and plant pathogen interaction, to obtain even better phenotyping data”, concludes Dr Padilla.
