Sinofert signed a cooperation agreement with the China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center led by academician Yuan Longping in Changsha, Hunan Province, stating that in the next five years, the company will give full play to its advantages in resources and products and combine the use of high quality fertilizer such as potash fertilizer with the research in super rice, so as to provide effective support to materialize the production target of 900 kg/mu for hybrid rice, increasing the per unit output by almost 10%. On the same day, Sinofert also employed Yuan Longping as the company’s senior adviser on fertilizer.
At the moment, the research in super hybrid rice has realized the Stage I target of 700 kg/mu of yield and Stage II of 800 kg/mu, and now is striving for the Stage III target of 900 kg/mu of yield in 2015. According to Yuan Longping, the Stage III target will be divided into three parts: 830 kg/mu in 2009, hopefully 860 kg/mu in 2010 which can help to realize the final target of 900 kg/mu one or two years ahead of the schedule. Yuan said that there was no doubt that the production of super rice could reach 1000 kg/mu in ten years, but the difficulty was becoming larger and larger. He hoped that the cooperation with Sinofert could help to materialize the target as soon as possible. Besides, Yuan took the opportunity to air his new understanding on chemical fertilizer: “previously people thought chemical fertilizer would damage the soil, which is not correct any more. I believe that simple reliance on organic fertilizer cannot provide enough nutrition to materialize high production. Therefore, the use of chemical fertilizer is a must-do.”
In 2006, Yuan proposed his idea to use super hybrid rice for good harvest: the production of super rice in three mu of land can equal to that of four mu of land at the moment, hugely increasing per unit yield and total output of rice production. If implemented, the proposal can greatly improve efficiency of staple food production, benefiting the farmers and guaranteeing food security.
Yuan said that Sinofert was the largest state-owned fertilizer manufacturer in China, with evident advantages in products, network, service and brand. The development of modern agriculture has shown that the increase in food production and farmers’ income must rely on the quality and efficient application of agricultural inputs. The cooperation with Sinofert could help to accelerate the achievement of targets set for the research and production of super rice.
