It’s essential that research has a strong impact, Teagasc has a long tradition of practical, applied research underpinned by good science, and this has delivered for Irish farmers, the agricultural industry and for the food companies we have today. That’s according to Dr Frank O Mara, Director of Research in Teagasc who was speaking at the annual conference of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) in Naas, today, Friday, 12 September.

“As a leading research organisation we obviously focus on conducting excellent science, and we publish over 400 peer reviewed publications each year, but equally important is that this research delivers a positive impact for industry. Recent examples of research having an impact would include Teagasc’s science-based submission to the review of the Nitrates Action Plan. Our work with ICBF on genetics and breeding has delivered real benefits onto farms through EBI. The work that Teagasc has conducted with food companies like the Irish Dairy Board has produced new cheeses for markets such as Saudi Arabia. So the focus is always on excellent research to deliver real impact.”

Dr O’ Mara, said: “The joint programmes Teagasc has with the dairy co-ops, the joint initiatives we have with meat processors, the engagement we have with over 250 food companies including public private partnerships, all ensure that we remain relevant to the development needs of the industry. The Food Harvest 2020 report sets out an ambitious plan to develop and grow Irish agriculture and Irish food production. Teagasc science, in collaboration with other organisations will help to make that happen. Our dairy industry is well positioned for expansion, and our research programme in Moorepark and other centres, has played an important role in providing the scientific base from which Irish farmers can grow and expand and which will allow our dairy companies to process the increased volumes of milk for premium markets.
