Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine has just adopted a new Law On amending the Law of Ukraine "On the state system of biosafety at the creation, testing, transportation and use of genetically modified organisms"”.
The purpose was to introduce an additional clause dealing specifically with veterinary issues and establishment of the “The central executive body for veterinary medicine”, which:
- -carries out state registration of GMO sources of feed, feed additives and veterinary products containing GMOs or derived from their use;
- -approves the list of feeds, feed additives and veterinary drugs, along with monitoring of their GMO content, and a list of appropriate methods of detecting and identifying GMOs;
- monitors the feed, feed additives and veterinary drugs obtained using GMOs, using registered GMO sources as criteria
Thus, like in Russian Federation, Ukraine establishes separate mechanisms for approval of GMO food and feed/GMOs destined for veterinary.
