May 29, 2013

Dow AgroSciences, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) announced today a significant wheat breeding collaboration with the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre, one of the nation’s premier plant breeding establishments. Under the R&D collaboration, Dow AgroSciences will partner with the Crop Development Centre on the development of wheat varieties for quality improvements and agronomic performance.

In a related news release, the Government of Saskatchewan announced today more than $5 million of funding both from the Province and private-sector partners for three projects targeting wheat enhancements. The projects are being funded through the Government’s Agriculture Development Fund. This partnership is part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s wheat research funding.

“At Dow AgroSciences, we see wheat as an important global crop and understand the value we can create across the wheat value chain so we’re excited to be partnering with the Crop Development Centre as we work toward a common goal of improving high quality wheat varieties with elite agronomic performance,” said David Dzisiak, Global Oils and Grains Commercial Leader, Dow AgroSciences. “Our collaborations hold the potential to dramatically impact crop productivity and quality components.”

“The Crop Development Centre enthusiastically welcomes Dow AgroSciences as a partner in this exciting undertaking on one of Canada’s most important food and export crops,” said Kofi Agblor, Managing Director of the Crop Development Centre. “The research focus on high quality wheat with elite agronomic performance is made possible by leveraging the scientific and technological resources of the partners, demonstrating that public-private partnerships are crucial to addressing challenges and opportunities in food production. The outcome of this collaborative work will provide Saskatchewan and western Canadian farmers with more options in wheat production.”
