Australian grain growers call for an independent wheat website to record market information and help growers make informed decisions about grain sales

New South Wales, Australia
July 29, 2009

Grain growers in NSW have today voted in favour of the development of an independent website to record market information and help growers make informed decisions about grain sales.

Growers are calling for a substantially better information flow out of the marketplace to help them make informed decisions on their grains marketing.

NSW Farmers’ Association Grains Committee Chair Richard Clark says the creation of a website will allow buyers to register their cash and any other pricing options at all receival depots.

“Since the introduction of the Wheat Export Marketing Act last year, many growers have found the discovery of grain prices difficult,” Mr Clark said.

“As a result, the Association feels the establishment of an industry-wide website to assist growers determine their options in this new market would be of great value.

“This website will include a range of information that is currently not available to Members in one central location, including daily domestic and international price movements, best cash and pool prices, price comparisons, as well as price discovery tools and indicators.

“The website could also serve as a place where growers can access seasonal and crop condition reports, weather conditions and planting intentions.

“The development of such a website is something we have previously discussed with the Federal Government and given the outcome of today’s vote we will continue to lobby for this,” Mr Clark concluded.

Today’s vote took place at the NSW Farmers’ Association’s Annual Conference at Sydney Showground. The Conference concludes tomorrow.
