CoproB Italia Zuccheri and their partner, the international breeding company United Beet Seeds (UBS) have launched a three-year genetic research project to select and develop innovative sugar beet varieties with an improved tolerance for stress caused by climate change. The research will focus on varieties suitable for the Italian territories.
The objective of the partners CoproB Italia Zuccheri and United Beet Seeds (UBS), headquartered in Belgium, is clear: the next three years they’ll be selecting and developing sugar beet varieties with an improved tolerance for various stresses, caused by global climate change. The program is based on experiences from the entire supply chain and will focus on delivering varieties specifically for the Italian territories.
In addition to the significant value of developing new beet varieties, there is also a common goal of improving the quality of production. This improvement is achieved through advanced agronomic research, which aims to increase the natural sugar content in beets, even if it means reducing the overall weight of the crop. In fact, for some years now, agricultural entrepreneurs in the supply chain have been complaining about an increasing difficulty in 'polarising', i.e. being able to rely on a high sugar content in beetroot. After careful analysis of an illustrative sample, it does not seem that the percentage levels reached a few years ago are being achieved.
Today, advances in genetics and specific agronomic studies of different crops have made significant progress. In this context, CoproB Italia Zuccheri has identified UBS as a partner in the improvement process to meet the needs of the supply chain. UBS, headquartered in Belgium, is a joint venture of the global beet and chicory activities of Groupe Florimond Desprez and DLF Seeds A/S and is specialising in all aspects of sugar beet seed research, production, processing and commercialisation. CoproB Italia Zuccheri's R&D agronomic staff shared that the signed agreement aims to experiment with thousands of old and new varieties in order to select and develop those suitable for our areas, given the current climate trends that are putting the resilience of the sector to the test. As part of the three-year project, techniques and varieties dedicated to autumn and summer sowing will be developed and improved. In particular, autumn sowing, where it is possible to select varieties that are resistant to bolting, could represent a positive turning point for the sugar beet sector in Italy. Currently, sugar beet seeds sown in autumn have a bolting percentage of a few percentage points, which is too high to be competitive compared to spring sowing, which has a much lower bolting index. However, CoproB will not abandon the study of summer sowing, being aware that it is not always an easy path to follow due to the known challenges of production areas.

Even going back to testing varieties considered obsolete could open up new perspectives, especially by selecting varieties that have a higher sugar content. Polarization in recent years has gradually decreased to the detriment of the marginality of our members. We have the duty and the task of reversing the trend. While waiting to be able to work on new generations of varieties produced with the new assisted hybridization techniques (tea), we have also set ourselves the goal of developing autumn sowing that could really represent a turning point in the cultivation of beet in Italy. Certainly a challenging path but one that, with UBS, we have decided to travel together.”

La "barbabietola del futuro" è il frutto di una ricerca sostenibile basata sull'esperienza della filiera italiana
CoproB Italia Zuccheri, in collaborazione con l'azienda internazionale di selezione genetica United Beet Seeds (UBS), ha avviato un progetto triennale di ricerca genetica per selezionare e sviluppare varietà innovative di barbabietola da zucchero con una maggiore tolleranza agli stress causati dai cambiamenti climatici. La ricerca si concentrerà su varietà adatte al territorio italiano
L'obiettivo dei partner CoproB Italia Zuccheri e United Beet Seeds (UBS), con sede in Belgio, è chiaro: nei prossimi tre anni selezioneranno e svilupperanno varietà di barbabietola da zucchero con una maggiore tolleranza agli stress causati dai cambiamenti climatici globali. Il programma si basa sull'esperienza dell'intera filiera e si concentrerà sulla fornitura di varietà specifiche per il territorio italiano.
Oltre al significativo valore dello sviluppo di nuove varietà di barbabietola, c'è anche l'obiettivo comune di migliorare la qualità della produzione. Questo miglioramento si ottiene attraverso una ricerca agronomica avanzata che mira ad aumentare il contenuto naturale di zucchero nelle barbabietole, anche se ciò comporta una riduzione del peso complessivo del raccolto. Infatti, da alcuni anni gli imprenditori agricoli della filiera si lamentano di una crescente difficoltà nella "polarizzazione", ovvero nella possibilità di ottenere un elevato contenuto di zucchero nella barbabietola. Dopo un'attenta analisi di un campione rappresentativo, non sembra che si stiano raggiungendo i livelli percentuali di zucchero raggiunti alcuni anni fa.
Oggi, i progressi della genetica e gli studi agronomici specifici su diverse colture hanno fatto passi da gigante. In questo contesto, CoproB Italia Zuccheri ha individuato in UBS un partner con cui collaborare per soddisfare le esigenze della filiera. Lo staff agronomico del dipartimento di R&S di CoproB Italia Zuccheri ha comunicato che l'accordo siglato mira a sperimentare migliaia di varietà vecchie e nuove per selezionare e sviluppare quelle più adatte alle nostre zone, tenendo conto delle attuali tendenze climatiche che stanno mettendo a dura prova la resilienza del settore. Nell'ambito del progetto triennale, saranno sviluppate e migliorate tecniche e varietà dedicate alla semina autunnale ed estiva. In particolare, la semina autunnale, che permette di selezionare varietà resistenti alla fioritura precoce, potrebbe segnare una svolta positiva per il settore della barbabietola da zucchero in Italia. Attualmente, la percentuale di fioritura precoce nei semi di barbabietola da zucchero seminati in autunno è troppo alta per essere competitiva rispetto alla semina primaverile, che ha un indice di fioritura molto più basso. Tuttavia, CoproB non abbandonerà lo studio della semina estiva, consapevole che non è sempre un percorso facile da seguire a causa delle note difficoltà nelle aree di produzione.
"Sono molto soddisfatto del percorso intrapreso con UBS, che ringrazio" - ha dichiarato il presidente di CoproB Italia Zuccheri Luigi Maccaferri. “Lo studio e lo sviluppo di varietà dedicate al mercato italiano è un aspetto fondamentale per la nostra filiera, alla luce dei cambiamenti climatici. Anche tornando a testare varietà considerate obsolete, si potrebbero aprire nuove prospettive, soprattutto selezionando varietà con un contenuto di zucchero più elevato. La polarizzazione negli ultimi anni è gradualmente diminuita a scapito della marginalità dei nostri soci: abbiamo il dovere e il compito di invertire la tendenza. In attesa di poter lavorare su varietà di nuova generazione prodotte con le nuove tecniche di ibridazione assistita (TEA), ci siamo anche posti l'obiettivo di sviluppare una semina autunnale che possa davvero rappresentare una svolta nella coltivazione della barbabietola in Italia. Si tratta certamente di un percorso impegnativo, ma che abbiamo deciso di intraprendere insieme con UBS”.

La soddisfazione come il successo dell’agricoltore sono entrambi legati all’attenzione che lo zuccherificio attribuisce al testare continuamente le varietà migliori, ma anche al confrontare le performance e la produttività tra i diversi periodi di semina: primaverile, anticipata, autunnale, ma anche estiva.
