May 23, 2025

Licence details

Licence number: DIR 218

Licence status: Application under evaluation

Category: Agricultural

Release: Commercial

Organisation: All Aussie Avocados Pty Ltd (trading as All Aussie Farmers)

Description:

All Aussie Avocados Pty Ltd (trading as All Aussie Farmers) is seeking approval from the Gene Technology Regulator for the commercial release of the GM Purple Tomato in Australia. The Regulator is currently not consulting with the public on this application.

Before public consultation, the Regulator must prepare a Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan for this proposal on any risks to people’s health and safety or to the environment from gene technology. This will be drafted in accordance with the Regulator’s Risk Analysis Framework.

We are currently expecting the draft Risk Assessment and Risk Management Plan and other information to be available from September 2025

We will notify our subscribers of the consultation and advertise it in newspapers and on our website. The consultation will be open for written submissions for at least 30 days.

GM Purple Tomato labelling and food safety

Permission for the GM Purple Tomato and its products to be sold as food for human consumption in Australia requires a separate application to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). FSANZ also sets the requirements for GM food labelling in Australia.

You can find information relating to GM food applications, including food labelling, on the FSANZ website.

GM Purple Tomato import

Prior to importing GM Purple Tomato as seeds, plants or fruit, an import permit from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (Biosecurity) would also be needed.
