USA - Syngenta announces an upcoming addition to its early-season insect management portfolio in the U.S. - Coming soon: Opello and Equento

Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
February 26, 2025

Upon registration, isocycloseram, the active ingredient found in Opello™ and Equento® insecticides, will provide a novel active ingredient for early-season insect management in corn, cereals and pulses.

Syngenta announced today it is seeking registration in the U.S. for a new active ingredient, isocycloseram, which will be trademarked as PLINAZOLIN® technology. Upon approval by the Environmental Protection Agency, this active ingredient is anticipated to be available as several different insecticide products that will manage insect pests in cotton, vegetables, field corn, tree fruit crops, cereals and more.

“This technology will roll out in multiple phases, with the first offering corn, cereal and pulse growers a solution for early-season pest management,” said Syngenta Technical Product Lead Kevin Langdon, Ph.D. “With pests becoming more difficult to manage, this active ingredient will provide growers with an important new option in their integrated insect management plans.”

Isocycloseram, which has been approved for use in other countries, will act by contact and ingestion, providing rapid feeding cessation. Leveraging this novel active ingredient in IRAC Group 30, will also provide growers with a new resistance management option.

Upon EPA registration, products containing PLINAZOLIN technology for early-season insect management will be sold under the following brand names:

  • Equento®: an insecticide seed treatment intended for use in cereals and pulses that will manage wireworms and other early-season, below-ground pests and will offer compatibility with other seed treatments.
    • Cereals ― White grub, wireworm
    • Pulses ― Wireworm, suppression of seed corn maggot
  • Opello™: a liquid, at-planting, soil-applied insecticide intended for use in field corn that will provide control of corn rootworm and other below-ground pests in a formulation designed to offer tank mix compatibility with starter fertilizers.
    • Corn ― Corn rootworm, wireworm, white grub

While the above-listed pests are proposed key targets, the proposed labels will be for a range of pests beyond those mentioned.
