Bínu, the new vegetable from Beyond Seeds, World Product of the Year at the Future Awards in Rotterdam - New international award for the company, after the Fruit Logistica 2024 Innovation Award, with Zucchiolo

September 27, 2024

It is a pumpkin yolk, a new species of cucurbit with an intense flavour and very nutritious, due to its high protein and mineral content.

Every year, We're Smart, the guide that ranks the best plant-based restaurants on the planet, presents the Future Awards, which recognise the creativity and vision of people and organisations in the world of fruit and vegetables. The awards seek out those people, products and projects that, on a global level, make an extraordinary contribution to a healthier world in which greener and more sustainable decisions are made, recognising those initiatives that can make a difference for a better future for people and the planet.

At this edition, held in Rotterdam (Netherlands), Beyond Seeds has received the World Product of the Year Award for Bínu , a new species of cucurbit consisting of a pumpkin bud, specifically the female flower of this species harvested before it opens and characterized by its intense flavor and high protein and mineral content.

The world's best vegetable chefs have awarded Bínu for its surprising proposal, since the three different parts of the pumpkin yolk provide a unique set of textures and flavours, all in a single vegetable.

Beyond Seeds CEO Francisco Bermúdez accepted the award and expressed his satisfaction at this new success, following the Innovation Award won by Zucchiolo at Fruit Logistica 2024. “It is a source of pride to see that Almería is not only a world leader in the production of fresh fruit and vegetables, but is also a great attraction for the Horeca channel and the best chefs in the world.”

This is demonstrated by the fact that, together with Beyond Seeds, the Green Gastronomy Congress, Vestial, has also been recognised as the Best Project for the Dissemination of Green Cuisine in its Future Awards 2024. Added to this is the recent nomination of the Tony García Espacio Gastronómico restaurant - run by Cellbitec Foundation Ambassador Tony García - for the We're Smart Discovery Awards, which will be awarded on 12 November in Valencia, during the presentation of a new edition of the ranking of the 100 best plant-based restaurants in the world.

Luxembourgish plant-based chef René Mathieu, a world-renowned chef with his restaurant La Distillerie, also made one of the dishes with Bínu that was served at the awards ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 people, at the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam. Mathieu highlighted the characteristics that make Bínu unique: “It is very tasty and versatile, with a surprising interplay of textures and flavours in the mouth.”

What is Bínu and its social character

It is a new vegetable concept for the European market. Specifically, it is the bud of the pumpkin, that is, the female flower of this species harvested before it opens or anthesis.

It is made up of three parts: a crunchy stem, a fleshy ovary with an intense flavour, and a very soft petal. It is an original, delicious and very nutritious vegetable due to its high protein and mineral content.

Nutritionally, Bínu stands out as an extraordinary source of protein, surpassing any pumpkin flower. In addition, it is packed with vitamins and minerals essential for health.

Beyond Seeds is committed to promoting research into pancreatic cancer and Lewy body dementia (LBD). As with Zucchiolo, the Almeria-based company has given a marked social character to the new Bínu vegetable, since part of the profits generated from its sales will be allocated to research into the fight against these diseases, through the Cellbitec Foundation.
