The International Atomic Energy Agency will hold a meeting April 11-15 to discuss ways to prevent the accidental shipment of agricultural pests across international borders. The meeting will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily in Rudder Tower on the Texas A&M University campus.
Scientists from the agency -- as well as from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, Syria, U.K., U.S. and Vietnam -- will share their latest research. The group is compiling information from studies on the development of ionizing irradiation for treating agricultural products, according to Dr. Suresh Pillai, Texas AgriLife Research microbiologist and director of the National Center for Electron Beam Research at Texas A&M.
Pillai said the group aims to compile the research results and plan for the international harmonization of ionizing irradiation for phytosanitary treatments.
