Over 70 hybrid varieties of forage sorghum, as well as the latest research will be featured during a sorghum plot tour on Aug. 20 in Bushland. (Kay Ledbetter/Texas A&M AgriLife)

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a forage sorghum plot tour on Aug. 20 in Bushland.

The free event will be held from 6-8 p.m. near Bushland Junior High School. To get to the plots, exit Interstate 40 at Bushland and turn south under the highway. Go west on the frontage road for a half mile and follow the sign to the plots. No preregistration is required.

Plot tour agenda

The tour will provide producers with an opportunity to view and evaluate 73 different sorghum hybrids grown in the same production environment. Participants will also receive current forage sorghum research updates from experts.

The speakers and topics include:

• Herbicide-tolerant forage sorghum — Kevin Heflin, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension program specialist in the Texas A&M Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Amarillo.
• Insect management in forage sorghum — Jose Santiago Gonzalez, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension entomologist and assistant professor in the Department of Entomology, Amarillo.
• Disease management in forage sorghum — Nolan Anderson, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research and AgriLife Extension plant pathologist and assistant professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, Amarillo.
• Forage sorghum use in the dairy industry — Juan Pineiro, DVM, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension dairy specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Animal Science, Amarillo.
• Public forage sorghum trial tour.
