Bayer CropScience is investing heavily to develop integrated crop solutions to best serve growers' needs. "Offering innovative tools from improved seeds through to post-harvest treatment, we address key challenges in modern agriculture and promote ways for a sustainable intensification of farming," said Ashish Malik, Vice President of Global Marketing Biologics at Bayer CropScience at the 8th Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM) in Basel, Switzerland. "Products based on biological modes of action for protection of plants against fungi, insect pests and nematodes complement our integrated offer and will help us meet customer needs." Together with seeds, traits, chemicals, services and Product Stewardship measures, biologicals constitute Bayer CropScience’s response to customer demand for higher yields, higher quality of harvested produce and new tools for improved resistance management. Bayer CropScience’s exhibition booth at the ABIM on October 21-23, 2013, is located in the Basel Congress Center Exhibition Hall.
Biologicals can help secure the global food supply
The global demand for biological crop protection solutions is growing. Bayer CropScience recognized the needs of its customers and began to step up its research into biologicals in 2009. As the first result, Poncho™/Votivo™, introduced in the United States on corn seed for the 2011 growing season and today also available for cotton and soybeans, combines a well established seed-applied chemical insecticide with a biological mode of action against nematodes, consistently providing higher crop yields. "Targeted crop protection combining chemicals and biologicals is a new way to serve sustainable agriculture in meeting current and future challenges," Ashish Malik points out. The United Nations estimates global food production needs to increase by some 70 percent by 2050 and biologicals can contribute to reaching this goal.
New tools in efficient production management
Recent strategic acquisitions have further strengthened the company´s portfolio of integrated crop solutions. Today, Bayer CropScience´s product portfolio includes biological fungicides such as Serenade™, Sonata™, and Contans™, the insecticide Requiem™, and the nematicide BioAct™. They enhance integrated pest management (IPM) and can help to secure grower and customer satisfaction. "Integrated crop solutions that include biologicals give growers new options to manage quality requirements of the food value chain," said Dr. Peter Lüth, Managing Director of Prophyta, a Bayer CropScience company developing and producing biologicals. Another important benefit of biologicals is that they have short pre-harvest and re-entry intervals and thus provide high flexibility on application timing for the grower. Further, when used in combination or rotation with chemicals, biologicals provide new tools in resistance management. "The bottom line is that biological crop protection products can help optimize the grower´s ability to manage destructive pests, improve yields, and thus increase their profitability," Peter Lüth added.
ABIM - the meeting place for the biocontrol industry
The Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM) is organized jointly by the International Biocontrol Manufacturers’ Association (IBMA) and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) Switzerland. During the three days of the ABIM, representatives of companies, research institutes, regulatory authorities and organizations from all over the world will exchange experiences and information on R&D trends, product innovations and developments on the global biologicals market. The scientific program covers the latest developments in regulatory affairs and novel biological products for efficient and environmental friendly plant protection.

Bayer CropScience investiert verstärkt in die Entwicklung integrierter Kulturlösungen, um den Bedürfnissen der Landwirte optimal Rechnung zu tragen. "Wir bieten innovative Tools an - von verbessertem Saatgut bis hin zur Behandlung nach der Ernte. Damit leisten wir einen Beitrag zur Bewältigung der zentralen Herausforderungen der modernen Landwirtschaft und zu ihrer nachhaltigen Intensivierung", sagte Ashish Malik, der bei Bayer CropScience für das globale Marketing von Biologika verantwortlich ist, anlässlich des 8. Annual Biocontrol Industry Meetings (ABIM) in Basel.
"Produkte auf Basis biologischer Wirkmechanismen zum Schutz von Pflanzen gegen Pilzerreger, Schadinsekten und Nematoden ergänzen unser integriertes Angebot und werden uns helfen, die Bedürfnisse unserer Kunden zu erfüllen", so Malik weiter. Biologika können zur Sicherung der globalen Nahrungsmittelversorgung beitragen
Die weltweite Nachfrage nach biologischen Pflanzenschutzprodukten steigt. Bayer CropScience hat die Bedürfnisse seiner Kunden erkannt und baut seine Forschung im Bereich Biologika seit 2009 aus. Das erste Ergebnis war das Produkt Poncho™/Votivo™, das zur Anbausaison 2011 in den USA für die Beizung von Maissaatgut eingeführt wurde und heute auch für Baumwolle und Sojabohnen erhältlich ist. Es kombiniert ein bewährtes chemisches Insektizid zur Behandlung von Saatgut mit einem biologischen Wirkmechanismus gegen Nematoden und führt so zu einer Steigerung der Ernteerträge. "Gezielter Pflanzenschutz mit einer Kombination von chemischen und biologischen Mitteln ist ein neuer Weg, um eine nachhaltige Landwirtschaft bei der Bewältigung heutiger und zukünftiger Herausforderungen zu unterstützen", erklärt Malik. Die Vereinten Nationen schätzen, dass die weltweite Nahrungsmittelproduktion bis 2050 um etwa 70 Prozent steigen muss. Biologika können dazu beitragen.
Neue Tools für ein effizientes Produktionsmanagement
Strategische Akquisitionen haben das Portfolio des Unternehmens im Bereich integrierter Kulturlösungen zusätzlich gestärkt. Ein weiterer wichtiger Vorteil von Biologika ist, dass für sie kurze Wartezeiten gelten, sodass der Landwirt bei ihrer Anwendung zeitlich sehr flexibel ist. Wenn sie in Kombination oder Rotation mit chemischen Mitteln angewendet werden, bieten Biologika zudem neue Tools für das Resistenzmanagement. "Alles in allem können biologische Pflanzenschutzmittel helfen, Schädlinge optimal zu bekämpfen, die Erträge zu steigern und dadurch die Rentabilität zu verbessern", fügte Lüth hinzu.

Das ABIM wird gemeinsam von der International Biocontrol Manufacturers’ Association (IBMA) und dem Schweizer Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau (FiBL) organisiert. Beim ABIM werden Vertreter von Unternehmen, Forschungsinstituten, Aufsichtsbehörden und Organisationen aus der ganzen Welt drei Tage lang Erfahrungen und Informationen über Trends in F&E, Produktinnovationen und Entwicklungen auf dem globalen Biologika-Markt austauschen.
