At Syngenta, we are deeply rooted in the seed treatment market with our long-standing commitment to the research and development of innovative seed treatment technologies. In June we were pleased to announce the results of our latest efforts - registration of Vibrance™ seed treatment fungicide, the company’s first fungicide developed specifically as a seed treatment and a new mode of action for the seed treatment market.
“Vibrance is a great addition to our Seedcare portfolio and will enhance our industry-leading line of fungicide seed treatment products in cereals, soybean and canola," said Chad Shelton, Seedcare brand asset lead, Syngenta. “We also look forward to bringing Vibrance to other crop markets in the coming years."
Through its new mode of action, Vibrance delivers an unmatched level of disease protection that results in stronger, more powerful roots. This Rooting Power™ helps increase emergence, improve nutrient and moisture uptake, and develop stronger plants. As a result, crops are better able to withstand the stresses of the growing season to deliver more consistent yield performance.
Soilborne Pathogens Pose Threat to Root Health
Rhizoctonia, Pythium and Fusarium have become increasingly common in cereal crops across the United States. In addition to damaging roots, soilborne pathogens like Rhizoctonia attack young seedlings, impairing their ability to absorb water and nutrients, which reduces emergence and stunts growth.
“Rhizoctonia infects the entire root system," explained Tim Paulitz,Ph.D.,research plant pathologist with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, Washington State University. “The pathogen hides out in dead roots. It forms a thick-walled mycelium, so it sits in the soil, surviving and waiting. When the pathogen senses the root growing, and the soil’s moisture level and temperature have become favorable, the mycelium or hyphae will contact the root, stimulate it to grow, and then penetrate. Once the pathogen infiltrates, it kills the root tissue, the root tips, the root cortex – the pathogen invades the entire root system."
Boost to Cereals Rooting Power
Vibrance provides cereal crops with enhanced disease protection against Rhizoctonia and other yield-robbing diseases like true loose smut. Sedaxane, the active ingredient in Vibrance, complements other Syngenta market-leading seed treatments in cereals. Wheat and barley growers will be among the first to experience the benefits of sedaxane and its Rooting Power through Vibrance Extreme™ fungicide and CruiserMaxx® Vibrance™ Cereals insecticide/fungicide seed treatment. Based on regional pest issues and other geography-related concerns, Vibrance will be marketed in cereal crops as follows:
- CruiserMaxx Vibrance Cereals seed treatment insecticide/fungicide will be available for application on-farm, on-site or through certified commercial treaters in the Northern Plains and Central markets. This will replace the current CruiserMaxx Cereals seed treatment insecticide/fungicide formulation.
- Vibrance Extreme seed treatment fungicide will replace the current Dividend Extreme® seed treatment fungicide formulation, will be available for application by certified treaters across the United States and is compatible with Cruiser® seed treatment insecticide to deliver disease and insect protection in one application.
Seedcare Leadership in Cereals
Cereal growers treating their seed with Vibrance Extreme or CruiserMaxx Vibrance Cereals are equipping their crops with powerful tools that not only defend against early-season pest-related yield limitations, but also deliver faster germination and emergence, increased stand establishment and more vigorous plants.
“The built-in Rooting Power of Vibrance brands helps develop robust root systems and vigorous plants that more efficiently absorb and utilize water and nutrients for a strong start," Shelton said. “As a result, stems and foliage are healthier and can better withstand environmental stress, which leads to enhanced and consistent yield performance. The Vibrance family of seed treatments strengthens our top-performing portfolio of seed treatment products and supports the Syngenta commitment to helping growers enhance root health and achieve top yields."
Root Health Online Education
Reinforcing its commitment to the seed treatment industry, Syngenta is now offering a new online Root Health Training Module as an educational tool for growers and retailers. Offering one CEU credit for completion, this valuable tutorial emphasizes the importance of healthy root systems and their ability to produce higher-quality crops with more consistent yield performance.
The training module walks participants through a series of informative sections, such as the basics of root systems, structures and functions, and then provides in-depth profiles of key factors that can potentially compromise root health, such as yield-robbing diseases and insects, as well as cultural practices like tillage and crop rotation. A cereals module explaining the role Vibrance formulations play in enhancing root health is scheduled for release, too. Offering educational tools such as this supports the Syngenta commitment to provide growers and retailers with the knowledge, service and top-performing products needed to achieve top yields and maximum profit.
