Biostimulating effects of Sedaxane - Towards a new concept in plant protection?

Basel, Switzerland
July 9, 2012

A new study by research firm BIOTransfer (France) revealed biostimulating effects on cereal roots and biomass development from sedaxane, the new active ingredient for seed treatment use from Syngenta. Sedaxane belongs to the new SDH inhibitor class of fungicides (SDHI group C2), and inhibits fungal metabolism by binding to the succinate dehydrogenase enzyme.

For the past fifty years, both the agro-industry and the public sector have led research to identify molecules that have biostimulating activity. However, very few products could show the reproducibility of biostimulating effects under both controlled and field conditions. Since biostimulating effects of sedaxane have been reported from the field, BIOtransfer has undertaken in-laboratory studies to look at the biostimulant effect of sedaxane on root growth under controlled conditions.

These studies showed that under sterile conditions and absence of pathogens, the use of sedaxane resulted in wheat seedlings emerging a few days earlier. Furthermore, the shoots and the root system of plants showed a faster development as well as an increase of biomass for both shoots and roots 60 days after planting. The effect on root growth was seen especially on the proliferation of lateral roots. These findings were observed in two varieties.

Based on these observations the research team at BIOtransfer concludes that understanding sedaxane`s mode of action resulting in enhanced root biomass could lead to a new concept of seed and root system protection.

Sedaxane is the active ingredient in the VIBRANCE™ product family, the new seed treatment fungicide from Syngenta that has RootingPower™.
