Leading experts gather at 2012 European Root Health Forum

Basel, Switzerland
April 17, 2012

On March 28th - 29th, more than 80 technical experts from eight European countries met in Mulhouse, France, and Stein, Switzerland, to discuss the latest research findings and innovations on Root Health. The 2012 European Root Health Forum, hosted by Syngenta, was building on the global Root Health Forum that took place 2011 in the US. It is the first of six regional Root Health Forums that Syngenta is hosting around the world over the course of 2012.

Root Health is a promising yet highly sophisticated research direction. It involves the study of many different factors and their complex interactions impacting root growth and crop productivity. To exchange knowledge about Root Health and the link to plant performance, Syngenta created the Root Health Forum and the Global Root Health Network on LinkedIn® bringing together leading experts on Root Health from private, public and nonprofit institutions worldwide.

“To better understand Root Health, we need a holistic view of the plant and soil environment, and thus an integrated scientific approach to identify effective solutions for the future”, comments Michel Petit, Product Biology Lead Seed Care EAME for Syngenta.

Panel discussions at the European Root Health Forum focused on European Root Diseases and Root Health, as well as novel methodologies to measure roots and root growth. Keynote speaker, Jean-Marc Seng, Research Managing Director, BIOtransfer and Associate Professor, Paris South – Orsay University, shared recent findings in Europe, building on his address during the 2011 Global Root Health Forum.

Participants also visited the Syngenta Global Research Center in Stein, Switzerland, where they could see specific Root Health laboratory examples related to sedaxane, a novel Syngenta active ingredient specifically tailored for seed treatment that has RootingPower™.

“The interdisciplinary set-up of the Forum created strong interaction between participants and presenters. We hope that this type of exchange and peer networking will help further the scientific discussion on European research related to root diseases and Root Health”, comments Andrea Zanaboni, Asset Manager EAME, Cereals Seed Care for Syngenta.
