Ever since soybean rust made landfall on U.S. soil in 2004, this potentially damaging pathogen has been menacing crops to various degrees over the growing seasons.
The latest Focus on Soybean webcast, authored by Edward Sikora, Extension Plant Pathologist at Auburn University, provides an update on what researchers have learned about Asian soybean rust in the U.S., as well as strategies to combat this disease.
Topics in this talk, titled “Soybean Rust Update,” include a discussion on general characteristics of the pathogen; symptom development; the role of kudzu as an overwintering host in the disease life cycle; benefits obtained from the National Soybean Rust project; seasonal weather conditions that favor or limit the development and spread of soybean rust in the U.S., and management recommendations.
