ENDURE is determined to play a positive role in aiding European Member States which must ‘establish or support the establishment of necessary conditions for the implementation’ of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as part of Europe’s long-term plans for the sustainable use of pesticides. A key part of the support ENDURE can offer policy makers is now reaching fruition with the publication of ENDURE Policy Briefs, a range of briefing documents designed to provide insights into the conditions necessary for the successful implementation of IPM.
ENDURE believes that changing farmer practices will depend not only on the initiative of individual farmers, but also on the knowledge, economic and social networks to which they belong. Thus ENDURE’s Policy Briefs are drawing on the expertise and research conducted by the Network of Excellence to extract key information for the policy making sphere.
The first in the ENDURE Policy Brief series focuses on the IPM continuum and sheds light on the role social relationships play in influencing how farmers move toward more sustainable crop protection strategies. The second examines the potential role of supermarket procurement strategies as drivers of IPM and the third analyses the opportunities for biocontrol in the implementation of IPM. The series will be completed later this month with the publication of a Policy Brief examining the drivers and barriers for successful IPM implementation.
