CPVO workshop on new phenotyping tools for DUS testing

France
June 3, 2025

In a context where DUS testing procedures face several challenges such as climate change, rising costs and the continuous expansion of variety collections, various initiatives have been launched around the world to address these challenges, notably through the use of image analysis and artificial intelligence.

In this context, the CPVO organised a one-day workshop to gather opinions and advice from specialist scientists, but also to learn about the tools and platforms available, to share experience gained from studies conducted by GEVES or other European examination offices, and finally to discuss the best ways to support the introduction of new phenotyping tools in DUS testing in the future.

During the workshop, GEVES gave a three-part presentation to share its experience on the current use of imaging in DUS testing: new vectors, such as drones and poles; and new methods being tested to replace some manual measurements, such as plant height. As a member of Phenome, the national infrastructure for field phenotyping of plants, GEVES continues to be involved in the development of new phenotyping tools and their integration for DUS and VSCU evaluations.
