The growing global population is bringing about an increase in the demand for sufficient safe food. The horticulture sector is one of the fields which can contribute to solving this problem on a global scale. So far, however, up-to-date information about the international horticulture supplier market has been lacking.
LEI Wageningen UR was commissioned by AVAG Plus, an umbrella organisation for horticulture supplies and services, to report on the economic significance of the sector, the current sustainability issues, and the forms of collaboration within the sector.
For years, Dutch horticulture suppliers have distinguished themselves from their colleagues elsewhere in the world by their use of a unique combination of available knowledge (software), technology (hardware), and operational services (orgware). This can enable them to play an important part in the production of sufficient, safe, sustainable food.
