- The biotechnology company Microomics is a spin-off from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) specialized in microbiome analysis.

There may be as many as one trillion species of microbes on Earth. Human beings are estimated to have ten times more bacteria than cells in our bodies. In short, microbes are of the utmost importance for our health and life on Earth, and form part of numerous biotechnological processes. Far from ignoring them, the scientific community has been studying them with interest for some time.
Microomics is one of the outcomes of the microbiome research efforts led by ICREA research professor at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona, Toni Gabaldón. Microomics is a Spanish company specialized in metagenomics that uses genomic microbiome analysis to create solutions that allow researchers to identify and study microbes with applications in the fields of health, agriculture and ranching, industry or research.
“Our mission is to turn the scientific knowledge on metagenomics and the microbiome into practical solutions for our clients, and society," states Toni Gabaldón, CRG group leader, and co-founder and chief scientific officer of Microomics. “We hope to transform genomic data into knowledge that enables the improvement of aspects such as health, quality of life or the environment," adds the researcher.
Microbes: a starting point for improvement of health, agriculture, industry or the environment
Microomics proposes solutions for its clients based on metagenomics, or the complete genomic analysis of a sample. This information lets us better understand this sample and establish hypotheses on the interactions among the various species found there.
Though only recently incorporated, Microomics has already built a strong portfolio of clients and projects in different areas of activity. A few examples are:
- Health – Detection of lung cancer / Oral implantology
Microomics works with European research groups to analyze the importance of and alterations in microbiota that are connected to airway pathologies, such as lung cancer. Another health care project is Microomics' cooperation with dental clinics to study the impact of interventions such as implants, and the use of new materials on the oral microbiome, as well as the appearance of risk microbiota related with dental and gum disease, etc.
- Livestock farming - Reduction or elimination of antibiotic use
Microomics contributes to more sustainable livestock farming that is more respectful with the animals by studying the effect of pre- and probiotics. The ultimate goal is to assess whether the use of pre- or probiotics enables the animals to grow healthier, and avoid or reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock farming.
- Food industry – Improvement in the processing chain
Microomics works with a number of companies to study, for example, food processing chains. This makes for better food production, identifying critical points in the chain and preventing cross-contamination.
- Environment – Substitution of chemical fertilizers / Biodiversity
Microomics offers services to fertilizer companies to assess the effectiveness of biofertilizers, with a view to replace chemical fertilizers with biofertilizers that contribute to sustainable agriculture. Further, it plays an active role in international environmental studies, such as the microbial characterization of the Pacific coast in North America.
- Research – Obesity treatment / Monitoring of patients in the ICU
Microomics works with hospitals and national research groups to characterize the microbiome associated with diseases and evaluate the effect that treatments and interventions have on it. For example, the analysis of the intestinal microbiome to evaluate the effect of probiotics and specific diets to treat childhood obesity, or studying the evolution of the intestinal and pulmonary microbiome in patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU).
In addition to all these activities, the spin-off conducts numerous projects in which microbes may reveal even more, seeking custom-designed solutions for every need their clients present. The Microomics team works hand in hand with their clients to jointly engineer each project.
The start-up was launched with a modest amount of seed capital, and a business model meant to achieve sustainability in the short-term. The company achieved its sustainability objective three months after its entry into the market. “This project has a broad-based project. Microbes and genomics are our starting point from which to reach truly innovative solutions that will allow us to tackle areas of interest in a number of industries," states Pedro González, co-founder and chief executive officer of Microomics. Following three months of activity, the company already has a portfolio of national and international accounts distributed over the four market areas it focuses on (health care, livestock and agriculture, consumer goods, and research). The company also takes a proactive role in national and international assistance consortia, consolidating their market niches and exploring new business opportunities.

Microomics is the second biotech company to be born in the laboratories of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), in Barcelona, Spain, whose mission includes turning scientific knowledge into benefits for health, and value for society. Nace Microomics, la empresa que une microbios y genómica para mejorar la salud, la agricultura o la industria

- La empresa se dedica exclusivamente a ofrecer soluciones de metagenómica que permitan identificar y estudiar los microbios para utilizarlos en el ámbito de la salud, la agricultura y la ganadería, los bienes de consumo, o la investigación.

Fruto de la investigación sobre el microbioma liderada por el investigador ICREA en el Centro de Regulación Genómica (CRG) Toni Gabaldón, nace Microomics. Microomics es una empresa especializada en metagenómica en España que, mediante el análisis genómico del microbioma, ofrece soluciones que permitan identificar y estudiar los microbios para utilizarlos en beneficio de la salud, la agricultura y la ganadería, la industria o la investigación.

Microbios: punto de partida para mejorar la salud, la agricultura, la industria o el medio ambiente
Microomics propone soluciones a sus clientes basándose en la metagenómica, es decir, el análisis genómico completo de una muestra. Esta información nos permite comprender mejor dicha muestra y establecer hipótesis sobre las interacciones entre las diferentes especies que en ella se encuentran.
Poco tiempo después de su constitución, Microomics ya cuenta con clientes y proyectos en diferentes sectores. Algunos de ellos son, por ejemplo:
- Salud – Detección del cáncer de pulmón / Implantología dental
Microomics colabora con grupos de investigación europeos analizando la importancia y las alteraciones de la microbiota asociadas a patologías de las vías respiratorias, como el cáncer de pulmón. Otro de los proyectos del sector de la salud es, por ejemplo, la colaboración con clínicas odontológicas estudiando del impacto de intervenciones como implantes y el uso de nuevos materiales sobre el microbioma oral, así como la aparición de microbiota de riesgo relacionada con enfermedades dentales y gingivales, etc.
- Ganadería – Reducción o eliminación del uso de antibióticos
Microomics contribuye a una ganadería más sostenible y respetuosa con los animales mediante el estudio del efecto de pre- y probióticos. El objetivo final es evaluar si el uso de pre- o probióticos permiten que los animales crezcan más sanos y evitar o reducir así el uso de antibióticos en ganadería.
- Industria alimentaria – Mejora de la cadena de procesado
Microomics colabora con diversas empresas para estudiar, por ejemplo, las cadenas de procesado en alimentación. Mejorando así la producción de alimentos, identificando puntos críticos en la cadena y evitando la intoxicación cruzada.
- Medioambiente – Sustitución de fertilizantes químicos / Caracterización biodiversidad
Microomics ofrece servicios a empresas de fertilizantes para valorar la efectividad de biofertilizantes con la mirada puesta en la sustitución de fertilizantes químicos por biofertilizantes que contribuyan a una agricultura sostenible. Además participa en estudios ambientales de carácter internacional, entre ellos la caracterización microbiana de la costa del océano Pacifico Norteamericano.
- Investigación – Tratamiento para la obesidad / Control de pacientes en la UCI
Microomics colabora con hospitales y grupos de investigación nacionales caracterizando el microbioma asociado a enfermedades y evaluando el efecto de tratamientos e intervenciones sobre el mismo. Por ejemplo, el análisis del microbioma intestinal para evaluar el efecto de probióticos y de dietas específicas para tratar la obesidad infantil, o el estudio de la evolución del microbioma intestinal y pulmonar en pacientes ingresados en unidades de cuidados intensivos (UCI).
Además, la spin-off lleva a cabo multitud de proyectos en los que los microbios todavía tienen mucho que desvelarnos y buscan soluciones a medida para cada cuestión que se plantee por parte de sus clientes. El equipo de Microomics trabaja junto a sus clientes para diseñar conjuntamente cada proyecto.
Microomics se ha formado con un modesto capital inicial y un modelo de negocio que persigue su sostenibilidad a corto plazo. La spin-off ya ha alcanzado la sostenibilidad económica 3 meses después de su incorporación al mercado. “Este proyecto cuenta con una amplia proyección, los microbios y la genómica son nuestro punto de partida para proponer soluciones realmente innovadoras que nos permitirán abordar cuestiones de interés en diferentes sectores,” afirma Pedro González, co-fundador y director ejecutivo de Microomics. Tras tres meses de actividad, la empresa ya cuenta con clientes nacionales e internacionales distribuidos en las cuatro áreas de mercado a las que se dirigen (salud, ganadería y agricultura, bienes de consumo, e investigación). Además, son proactivos participando en consorcios de ayudas nacionales e internacionales, consolidando sus nichos de mercado y explorando nuevas oportunidades de negocio.
Investigación básica que contribuye al tejido económico y beneficia la sociedad
Microomics es la segunda empresa biotecnológica que nace de los laboratorios del Centro de Regulación Genómica cuya misión incluye trasladar el conocimiento científico en beneficios para la salud y en valor para la sociedad. Luis Serrano, director del CRG, afirma que “la investigación de excelencia acaba creando valor, puestos de trabajo y soluciones a los retos de la sociedad, cuando hay un ambiente que favorece la transferencia de conocimiento”. La existencia y el apoyo de la oficina de tecnología y desarrollo de negocio (TBDO) y la apuesta por iniciativas como la BioBusiness School o el programa Entrepreneur-in-Residence del CRG han permitido que Microomics sea hoy una realidad. “Es un nuevo ejemplo sobre cómo una investigación puntera y arriesgada si, además, cuenta con el apoyo y el acompañamiento necesarios, puede mejorar la vida de las personas y contribuye a la sociedad produciendo conocimiento y riqueza.”
