The UK’s Rothamsted Research celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2018 and will be marking the occasion with a three-day conference dedicated to exploring the role of classical and other long-term experiments in agricultural science.

One of the two UK partners involved in ENDURE, Rothamsted reports: “2018 marks the 175th Anniversary of Rothamsted, our origin being dated as the first plantings of the Barnfield and Broadbalk Experiments in 1843. Broadbalk is identified as the longest running scientific experiment in the world by Guinness World Records, and the ‘Classical’ experiments are rightfully acknowledged as marking the beginnings of modern agricultural science.

“To celebrate the unique role of the Classical and other Long-Term Experiments in agricultural science, we are holding a conference to explore their role in resolving questions regarding the future of agriculture. The conference will follow on from last year's Global Long-Term Experiments workshop at Rothamsted that began to plan a Global Long-Term Experiments Network (GLTEN), assessing the viability and progress of this idea."

The event will take place from May 21 to May 23, 2018, at Rothamsted’s headquarters in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.
