GRDC helps Queensland growers with wheat variety selection

Australia
March 9, 2016

Planning for the upcoming winter season has just become easier for Queensland wheat growers following the release of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) 2016 Queensland Wheat Variety Guide.

Available as a hard copy or for download on the GRDC website www.grdc.com.au/NVT-QLD-WheatVarietyGuide-2016, the publication enables growers to drill down into specific variety characteristics such as yield performance and disease ratings to ensure selected varieties are ideally suited to their local production conditions.

The annual guide is a collation of data from the GRDC-funded National Variety Trials (NVT) which benchmark the performance of regionally important varieties to develop individual disease and agronomic ratings, varietal information and recommendations on planting windows and herbicide sensitivity.

Its production represents an important on-going investment for the GRDC according to GRDC grower services manager – north, Sharon O’Keeffe, as it enables growers keep up-to-date with the performance of new and existing varieties.

“Selecting the right variety can mean the difference between a profitable and unprofitable crop,” Ms O’Keeffe said.

“It’s a key management decision which can affect everything from sowing time to disease management, fertiliser requirements and herbicide use. At the end of the day, all these elements dictate yield and input costs so it’s important to get it right.”

For complete information on the released varieties in the Queensland NVT trials, visit the NVT website at http://www.nvtonline.com.au/.
