USDA/NIFA awards more than $15 million to support plant production research

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced more than $15 million in grants that will provide fundamental research through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative’s (AFRI) Plant Health and Production and Plant Products (PHPPP) program areas, focusing on plant production. This program is administered through USDA's National Instituture of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
  
Grants were awarded through the AFRI Foundational program area which supports basic and applied research in the following areas: plant breeding for agricultural production; plant growth and development, composition, and stress tolerance; and photosynthesis and nutrient use in agricultural plants. From 2009-2015, PHPPP has awarded more than $89 million to further progress and solve challenges in plant production through research, education, and extension.
