New rice lowers methane emissions

An international group lead by researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences has developed a rice which significantly reduces methane fluxes from rice paddies.
Atmospheric methane is an important greenhouse gas, and is considered to be responsible for one fifth of the global warming effect. Rice paddies are the largest source of methane caused by humans.
The increasing demand for food in the world leads to a higher demand for rice, exacerbating the effect of methane emissions to the atmosphere. The SUSIBA2 rice offers sustainable means of providing increased starch content for food production while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions from rice cultivation.
