Studies of cereal pathogen populations in the UK have shown rusts are becoming increasingly diverse – affecting varieties in different, and often unpredictable, ways – and crops should be monitored closely.
This was a key message arising from the UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey (UKCPVS) stakeholder event held in Cambridgeshire earlier this month.
Key findings
1. Yellow rust samples were dominated by warrior-type isolates
2. Warrior-type isolates carry a range of virulence genes
3. Variety diversification grouping has not been possible (because of Point 2)
4. 20 out of 41 of the current Recommended List varieties were resistant to all yellow rust isolates tested
5. Wheat brown rust isolates are becoming more complex
