A Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) publication provides a summary of priorities identified by GRDC Regional Cropping Solutions Networks (RCSNs), which are comprised of growers, advisers and researchers.

The 2013-14 GRDC RCSN western region annual report From the Ground Up shows that high priority research, development and extension (RD&E) issues identified by WA’s five RCSNs include:

• Weed management
• Rotations
• Frost
• Non-wetting soils
• Soil acidity and/or sodicity
• Farm business profitability
• Decision-support tools that combine economic, physical and technical data
• Precision agriculture and variable rate technology
• Water use efficiency

GRDC western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said the RCSNs were a vital part of the GRDC’s issues identification process for the western grain growing region, and were also provided with significantly increased funding in 2013-14 for ‘fast track’ projects.

“These are short-term projects that have been identified by the RCSNs as necessary to deliver a practice change on priority issues,” Mr Roberts said.
