An independent life-cycle profile funded by the United Soybean Board (USB) and soybean checkoff shows multiple energy and environmental benefits of U.S. soybean farming and processing as well as soy-based products.
The study collected U.S. agricultural data for 2001-2007, updating the previously used U.S. soybean production and processing life-cycle data from 1998-2000.
Among other findings, the updated data show U.S. soybean farming has made itself more sustainable compared with the previous data by reducing emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide as well as the direct energy used in the form of diesel fuel and gasoline.
Additionally, the new information found a 45 percent reduction from the previous data in the energy consumed by U.S. soybean processing facilities.
