Cutting edge grain industry research will take centre stage next week when the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) northern panel travels to the northern rivers region.
The tour will meet with representatives from the Coastal Grower Solutions Group and visit GRDC-funded trial sites for an overview of the region’s research-focussed drive to improve crop productivity, agronomic practices and farm profitability.
Participants will also visit ground breaking GRDC-funded trials into new crop germplasm, agronomic practices and soil and crop nutrition being conducted at the University of Queensland (UQ) Gatton campus and travel to the South Burnett region to meet with the Coastal Grower Solution group, GRDC-funded PhD students studying peanut breeding, soil and leaf disease screening and discuss current research into pulse agronomy and soil/crop nutrition.
Being held from Monday September 8 to Wednesday September 10, the tour encompasses two separate groups of GRDC northern panel members, GRDC board members and staff – one touring to the northern rivers region of New South Wales, Toowoomba, Gatton and Kingaroy while the other group will travel from Emerald to Moura and Biloela.
It offers growers and consultants an opportunity to directly express their research priorities to key decision makers and have a valuable input into the future direction of research, development and extension in the northern region.
GRDC Northern Panel chair James Clark said regular industry consultation was invaluable and enabled the panel to refine research priorities for the northern region.
“The northern panel, which comprises a mix of growers, senior agronomists and consultants, is dedicated to ensuring that grower levies are directed into research and development activities that have a meaningful, lasting and profitable impact in the paddock,” Mr Clark said.
“The spring tour is an ideal opportunity for us to travel into key production areas and source feedback from growers and industry personnel about the major agronomic and production challenges they are facing.
“Investigating these challenges and finding cost-effective, long term solutions is the only way to drive our industry forward in terms of production and profitability.
“Similarly, the spring tour offers growers and consultants the opportunity to ask questions about the GRDC’s investments in areas like crop nutrition, pest and disease management, soil management, herbicide resistance management and varietal development.”
At the conclusion of the tour, participants will gather in Brisbane to discuss their observations, industry feedback and suggestions.

The tour will visit GRDC-funded trial sites across the region for an update on current research projects into some of the industry’s most pressing agronomic and management challenges such as soil and crop nutrition, varietal performance, row spacing and planting window management, and strategic tillage.
Participants will also visit National Varietal Trials (NVT) focused on wheat, barley and chickpeas as well as chickpea breeding trials and relevant breeders will be in attendance.
