Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) today called for submissions on an application to approve a genetically modified processing aid.
FSANZ Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Marion Healy said the application, from Novozymes Australia, was seeking approval to use a genetically modified enzyme, xylanase, for use in the bread-making industry.
“The FSANZ safety assessment concluded there were no public health and safety concerns associated with the use of the enzyme,” Dr Healy said.
The enzyme has been modified to improve production processes and to improve the characteristics of bread.
Food produced using the enzyme would have to be labelled ‘genetically modified’, if any novel protein remained in the final food.
“FSANZ welcomes comments from government agencies, public health professionals, industry and the community on this application.”
The closing date for submissions for this application is 5 September 2014.
