Colorado Department of Agriculture holds public meeting on Wheat Assessment Referendum

Lakewood, Colorado, USA
January 13, 2014

The Colorado Department of Agriculture is seeking public comment per the request of the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee as they are seeking re-approval for an increase in their assessment.

In 2007, wheat producers approved an amendment to the Colorado Wheat Marketing Order to increase the assessment from one cent per bushel to two cents per bushel, subject to re-approval by July 1, 2014. If not re-approved, the assessment will revert to the one cent per bushel assessment rate.

“If you are a wheat producer, please express your opinion by attending this important meeting,” said Colorado Agriculture Commissioner, John Salazar. “This is your marketing order and the decision on an assessment increase should be made by those who will be most affected—Colorado’s wheat producers.”

The Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee is one of nine Colorado Market Orders operating within the state in which the goal of each order is to establish and expand the market as well as create and maintain the product as a viable crop in Colorado.

The meeting will be held at the Hub City Senior Center located at 220 East Avenue in Limon, CO 80828 at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.

Written comments may also be submitted via e-mail to markets@state.co.us or mailed to Casey Palmer at the Colorado Department of Agriculture, 700 Kipling Street, Suite 4000, Lakewood, CO 80215. All comments must be received no later than Friday, January 24, 2014 at 5 p.m.
