USDA/PVPO grants protection to thirteen new plant varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of thirteen new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include fescue, rice, soybean, wheat and zinnia.
The thirteen certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.
The thirteen certificates are:
- the Coyote II variety of tall fescue, developed by The Scotts Company, LLC, Marysville, Ohio;
- the KOSHIHIKARI H3 variety of rice, developed by Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan;
- the 93Y71, 91Y80, 92Y10 and 92Y31 varieties of soybean, developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, Iowa;
- the Brennan*, Jenna* and Oakes* varieties of common wheat, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Junction City, Kans.;
- the W1104* variety of common wheat, developed by Syngenta Seeds, Inc., Vernon, Tex.;
- the Barlow* variety of common wheat, developed by NDSU Research Foundation, Fargo, N.D.;
- the AGS CL7* variety of common wheat, developed by University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc., Athens, GA; and
- the SAKZIN011 variety of zinnia, developed by Sakata Seed Corporation, Tsuzuki-ku, Yokohama, JAPAN.
* In the United States, seed of this variety (1) shall be sold by variety name only as a class
of certified seed and (2) shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).
