New spring wheat variety SY Rowyn from Syngenta is all-around performer in U.S. Northern Plains

SY Rowyn, a new AgriPro® brand spring wheat variety from Syngenta, will be available to Northern Plains growers for 2014 planting. An all-around performer, SY Rowyn outyielded most established varieties in a trialing region that included northwestern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota with a three-year average of 67.5 bu/A, according to 2011-2013 trial data recently released by Syngenta.
The new hard red spring wheat variety is well-suited to growers across the Northern Plains who are looking to achieve increased yield potential.
“We are excited to offer SY Rowyn to growers this year, as it has delivered consistent performance in terms of yield and disease tolerance,” said Joe Smith, Syngenta spring wheat breeder for the Northern Plains. “It is higher tillering than many of our recent releases and has maintained high test weight.”
“It’s done well for us as far down as our South Dakota plots and as far west as Montana,” Smith said. “We expect growers will be very pleased.”
Bill Ongstad, a grower and AgriPro seed associate based in Harvey, N.D., said that SY Rowyn was a top performer in his fields this year.
“It was a great all-around year for our wheat,” Ongstad said. “Yields were right around 70 bu/A across the board – above average for this part of the country – and SY Rowyn went as high as 90 bu/A.”
The trial data was unveiled at the 2014 Northern Plains Syngenta seed associates kickoff meetings in North Dakota. In addition to providing seed and product updates, Syngenta also recognized the top-performing wheat seed associates in the Northern Plains for sales excellence and achievement.
Awards were given to 42 associates based on sales volume and their commitment to producing top-quality, certified wheat seed for distribution in the region. Planting certified seeds helps ensure genetic purity, smoother plantability, seedling vigor and improved germination and emergence.
