Oregon firm pays $1,050 to settle seed case

May 29, 2013 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announced that Mountain View Seeds Ltd., Salem, Ore., has paid $1,050 to settle alleged violations of the Federal Seed Act.
This settlement resolves three cases, which involved one shipment of a grass seed mixture to Illinois, one shipment of crimson clover to Georgia, and one shipment of red fescue seeds to Missouri. The shipment to Illinois was subsequently shipped to Indiana where the seed was officially sampled. The alleged violations, while not the same for all shipments, were:
- false labeling of pure seed and germination percentages.
AMS administers the Federal Seed Act with the assistance of state seed officials. The investigation was completed through the joint efforts of AMS and seed regulatory officials in Georgia, Indiana, and Missouri. The Federal Seed Act is a truth-in-labeling law designed to protect farmers and consumers who buy seed.
