All-America Selections and three of our esteemed Canadian trial sites have planned a very enjoyable and educational two-day event in the beautiful Niagara Peninsula. Join us and Stokes Seeds, William Dam Seeds and the University of Guelph as we tour each of the AAS Trials, seen in their peak from August 12th through 14th.
Monday, August 12
Welcome to Canada! After flying into Toronto’s Pearson International Airport or the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, it’s an easy hour drive to the Waterfront Hotel in Burlington, Ontario, located at the scenic westernmost tip of Lake Ontario. After picking up your AAS Summer Summit registration packet at the hotel, enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new peers at the AAS Opening Reception, held in the Burlington Hotel’s Waterfront Room.

Tuesday, August 13
Enjoy your group breakfast at the hotel before boarding the bus for an 8:00AM departure. Today we have a diverse group of stops; first we’ll see the many container trials at JVK in St. Catharines then we’ll tour the AAS Flower, Bedding Plant and Vegetable Trials at Stokes Seeds’ Research Farm. After lunch we’ll see the rest of the new variety trials that Stokes conducts before including them in their catalog. Then we’ll take a short drive to the Vineland Research Station for tours and demonstrations of an ethnic vegetable breeding program, their drought tolerance breeding and more.
After a full day of tours and trials, it’s time for a little relaxed education so we head to the Niagara College Teaching Winery which is the center for wine (and beer) education in the Niagara Peninsula. Lucky us, we’ll divide into two groups with half getting to tour the vineyards and wine tasting room while the other half learns about the brewing process and goes on a beer tasting tour.
From there, we’ll head to the Ball’s Falls Conservation Area to appreciate the beauty of the Niagara Escarpment up close as we take a short hike before our evening cocktail hour and casual dinner right in the park.

Wednesday, August 14
At this morning’s breakfast, we will be joined by a number of Toronto/Niagara area garden writers who we specially invited to learn more about the AAS Trials, the AAS Winners and our wonderful people. The garden writers will be our special guests as we depart for an hour drive to the University of Guelph. At Guelph we will tour the university’s AAS Bedding Plant and Flower trials and be treated to a presentation on the latest horticulture research from their experts. After lunch at the University’s Turfgrass Institute, we’ll drive to William Dam Seeds in Dundas for tours of their AAS Vegetable Trials and seed packaging facility.
Once back at the hotel, we’ll allow a short break for putting your feet up before freshening up for the evening’s foray to the Royal Botanical Gardens, Canada’s largest botanical garden, located just a short bus trip away from our hotel. Royal Botanical Gardens is an AAS Display Garden, so we’ll enjoy touring that area while having cocktails in the garden, weather permitting. From there, we’ll move to the beautiful RBG Centre for our traditional Summer Summit wrap-up event, the Awards Banquet.
This year's honoree for the Breeder's Cup Award is Mr. Rob Johnston Jr. of Johnny's Selected Seeds, breeder of famous AAS Winners such as 'Baby Bear' pumpkin, 'Bon Bon' squash, 'Carmen' pepper and many more.
As for the honoree for the AAS Medallion of Honor, it's being kept a surprise until August 14th so you'll have to join us to find out who it is!

All-America Selections® was founded in 1932 and continues as the oldest independent testing organization in North America. Every year, new, never-before-sold varieties are trialed in our Trial Grounds and professional horticulturists determine which varieties will be deemed winners based on their garden performance. AAS relies upon a public relations program to inform gardeners about AAS Winners that are announced three times each year.
