Knowing your enemy – the future of crop protection

United Kingdom
April 23, 2013

Whether it is a pest, weed or disease, knowing your enemy is the focus of an AHDB Crop Research Conference being held this autumn.

The conference takes place on 25 September at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London. On the day, AHDB will bring together scientists, policy makers and industry-innovators to map out how recent advances in insect, plant and pathogen science can be used in agriculture.

According to Susannah Bolton, Head of Research and Knowledge Transfer at HGCA: “There is a great deal of excellent work being done right across biosciences. This conference is all about understanding how this knowledge can be turned into practical methods for use on farms.”

Dr Bolton explains: “In agriculture, problems can emerge suddenly and soon become significant. Better knowledge of the underlying biology of pests, weeds and pathogens means we can deal with these challenges and be better prepared to manage unexpected problems.”

Speakers due to speak at the event include resistance expert John Lucas of Rothamsted Research and Allan Downie of the John Innes Centre. Dr Downie led the government’s response to ash dieback and he will be presenting his thoughts on what we can learn from the experience.

During the conference, there will also be an exhibition area featuring the research of PhD students and displays from leading research centres.
