HGCA trials have looked at the effect of manganese, copper and zinc applied at a rate recommended for treating a severe micronutrient deficiency on wheat sites likely to be at high risk of deficiency.
Despite some indicators – including soil analysis, deficiency symptoms and leaf tissue analysis – suggesting a potential problem, micronutrient applications only affected yield on one occasion. This was in response to a copper application in 2012, which could have been due to fungicidal effect.
The research trials (Project 3508) have been conducted over a number of years and the project is helping to refine understanding of micronutrient deficiency risks.
