Rijk Zwaan opens new R&D facilities in Spain

De Lier, The Netherlands
November 29, 2012

On Wednesday 28 November, Rijk Zwaan officially opened two new facilities at its site in El Mamí. The new cell biology lab and completely renovated and extended phytopathology lab will help Rijk Zwaan to continue to create the top-class vegetable varieties of the future.

This opening of these two facilities marks the end of Rijk Zwaan’s substantial investment plan in Spain, in which it completely renovated all its Research and Development installations. This large investment demonstrates Rijk Zwaan’s strong confidence in the future of a high-tech, creative breeding industry in Europe.

“Our Spanish colleagues are highly motivated to make better varieties for Rijk Zwaan, for the Spanish growers and for growers in the rest of the world,” says Kees Reinink, Managing Director R&D. “Our new cell biology lab will speed up the development of parent lines for new varieties. Meanwhile, in the new phytopathology lab, our team will identify varieties with better resistances to continue to meet our customers’ needs.”
