- Newly appointed Breeding Project Lead concentrating on early maturity soybeans
- Varietal development designed to expand options for growers in geographies where soybeans haven’t been considered part of normal crop rotation
Syngenta Canada Inc. announced today that as part of the organization’s North American soybean crop strategy, Jake Delheimer has been appointed as a Breeding Project Lead (BPL) to support expanding soybean production in Western Canada. Jake will be focusing his breeding efforts on early maturity soybeans for the Manitoba and Saskatchewan markets.
“There has been accelerating growth in soybeans across Western Canada, fuelled by a combination of factors including varietal development, market conditions and rotational considerations,” explains Don McClure, Syngenta Soybean Breeding Project Lead, Early East. “Syngenta has been a leader in developing soybean varieties appropriate for the agronomic and environmental conditions in Eastern Canada, and we look forward to leveraging this expertise as we intensify our focus on breeding varieties suited to Western provinces.”
Jake will be working with Maturity Group (MG) 00-000 material adapted for Manitoba and Saskatchewan and will oversee all trialing planned for Western Canada. Jake, who has a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from North Carolina State University, will be based out of Glyndon, Minnesota and operate as part of the northern soybean breeding team led by Glenn Bowers, Global Head, Soybean Breeding for Syngenta.
“While these are early days in our soybean varietal development program for Western Canada, this appointment reflects the commitment Syngenta is making to ensuring that growers will ultimately have a range of high-yielding, high-performance options from which to choose,” concludes McClure.
