Hundreds turn out for Nunhems’ festive 2012 Onion Showcase in Parma, Idaho

Nearly 400 local and regional growers, and industry specialists from around the world, gathered at a Story Farms onion field in nearby Roswell yesterday for Nunhems’ 29th annual Onion Showcase.
At this year’s Onion Showcase, Nunhems celebrated the 20th “birthday” of Vaquero, one of the most successful long-day onion varieties and still one of the most-grown varieties in the Treasure Valley. Attendees enjoyed lunch and celebrated with commemorative hats, wrapped gifts and themed birthday cakes.
A thirty-second video depicting a real birthday party for Vaquero – complete with a miniature party hat! – was even created for the occasion.
The event also provided an opportunity for the company to show its support for those who’ll influence the next 20 years of the industry. As part of the Showcase, Nunhems donated $5,000 – $2,500 each to the Snake River FFA (Oregon) and Western Idaho FFA Districts. The donations will allow the district FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) officers to purchase new equipment, help students participate in educational events and competitions, and further enhance practical, hands-on agricultural education.
