Australia
July 30, 2012
Scientific understanding of short-term weather conditions, seasonal forecasts and longer-term climate risks is developing rapidly, as is our ability to manage agriculture’s vulnerability to increasing seasonal variation.
Peak horticulture body Growcom invites growers to improve their knowledge and skills in this area by attending an interactive workshop in August in Gatton.
The two-day workshop has been designed specifically for horticulture growers in collaboration with Growcom and the University of Queensland, and aims to assist growers to cope better with variable seasonal conditions and climate risk.
Guest speaker is Dr Jeff Clewett, Principal Scientist, Agroclim Australia and Adjunct Professor, University of the Sunshine Coast.
Dr Clewett was a researcher for the Department of Primary Industries for 35 years, a Program Leader for the Queensland Center for Climate Applications and has recently completed a climate risk module for the grains industry on best management practices.
David Putland, Growcom’s Policy Manager and Climate Change Project Officer will also be on hand to assist.
The workshop will help growers to assess their current management practices and will introduce a range of new tools including useful websites and smart phone apps to improve their skills.
On successful completion of the training, participants will achieve an accredited unit of competency that forms part of diploma-level qualifications in AgriBusiness Management.
The workshop will run on Thursday and Friday, 16-17 August at Queensland Gatton Vocational Education Centre (G-VEC), Gatton.
The cost is $270 (including GST) per person. Accommodation is available on the Gatton campus at $65 per person, per night including three meals.
Places are limited to 15 participants, so early bookings are essential. The registration deadline is Monday 6 August.
