Agrisoma Biosciences Inc. is one step closer to realizing its vision of delivering a sustainable and scalable energy feedstock source for biojet and biodiesel fuel with the harvest of the 2011 Carinata crop. The first crush of Carinata seed is already complete, with the resultant oil shipped to Honeywell UOP for processing into biojet fuel.

“This is a thrilling time for Agrisoma as it marks the first pilot-scale production of biofuel from Carinata,” explains Patrick Crampton, Vice President Business and Product Development for Agrisoma. “Despite a challenging season, our production sites performed well, yielding more than enough for full-scale testing of Carinata biojet fuel. Our certified seed production plans for 2012 commercialization are also on track.”

Growers who seeded Carinata this spring are impressed with the results. Erroll Simington of Kincaid, Saskatchewan says that his Carinata yielded 10 bu/acre more than his brown mustard grown in the next field. “The Carinata proved a strong performer, despite some challenging weather conditions. It yielded better than some mustard crops that I’ve grown here for many years.”

Carinata delivers returns at both ends of the value chain. For growers, it is a vigorous, competitive crop uniquely suited to semi-arid production areas. For biofuel manufacturers, Carinata provides a sustainable source of high quality oil that enables additional efficiencies from biofuel manufacturing processes.
