Today, a representative from vegetable breeding company Rijk Zwaan will be one of the speakers at the Sino Dutch Agricultural Innovation Conference. This congress takes place in Beijing to mark the official trade mission to China, which is being led by Minister Verhagen from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation.

In cities right across China, the rapid expansion of a middle class with significant purchasing power is leading to a dramatic increase in the demand for high-quality, safe and convenient food. Since the Chinese agricultural sector currently has neither the knowledge nor the infrastructure to cope with this level of demand, the country’s agri-food business is in urgent need of innovation.
Expertise
Jan Doldersum (photo), Chain Manager for Rijk Zwaan, comments: “Together with a consortium of Dutch companies and research institutions, Rijk Zwaan is keen to share its knowledge and key technologies with the Chinese agricultural sector. By making our expertise in vegetable growing and marketing available to China, we are able to contribute to a very topical and challenging issue in the country: ‘Metropolitan Food Security’.”
Chain management
Metropolitan Food Security will also be one of the key topics of the Sino Dutch Agricultural Innovation Conference. The conference is being jointly organised by the agricultural department of the Dutch embassy in China and the Beijing Agricultural Bureau, and will be officially opened by Minister Verhagen. Rijk Zwaan’s Jan Doldersum will be one of the speakers during the seminar entitled ‘Metropolitan Agricultural Product Supply and Sustainable Development’. Presenting alongside Alastair James from grocery retailer Tesco, he will explain how chain management could play an important role in the development of the Chinese vegetable sector.
