United Kingdom - Why Syngenta's milling wheat SY Cheer is a winning choice this autumn

United Kingdom
July 31, 2025

The Group 1 milling wheat market has seen few variety additions in the past few years, but now with two new varieties available, growers have more choice.

Growers are looking for consistent performance and SY CHEER has proven to be a consistent performer across the four years in official trials, with less than 2% difference in yield across the seasons. Similarly, regional yields are strong across the UK when drilled early or late.

As well as consistency, grain quality is particularly high for SY CHEER, boasting the highest Hagberg Falling Number and Specific Weight of all the Group 1 varieties, ensuring protection for grain quality in wet harvests. High protein provides growers with an easy switch out of older varieties.

Disease resistance has been a big topic of 2025, with a big shift in yellow rust prevalence and susceptibility. Although yellow rust has now been seen at the seedling stage in SY CHEER, disease resistance still holds strong at later stages, and ratings are likely to remain higher than current Group 1 varieties of Skyfall and KWS Zyatt.

Flexibility in drilling timings is becoming more and more important considering recent weather experienced during the months of September and October, over the last two years. SY CHEER has a latest safe drilling date of end of January and can be drilled from mid-September onwards. Its moderate maturity and strong straw make it a solid choice for the majority of the drilling season.

SY CHEER received Group 1 status by the UK Flour Millers in 2024. It is supported by the member millers in this group. Yield and quality results will be a key factor in variety choice this year, so keep checking the Syngenta website for updates on harvest results for 2025.
