USA - Soybean growers discover return on investment protection in sliding market

Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
October 15, 2024

With harvest completing, the 2024 season ends with the Bloomberg Grains Subindex falling 17% this year, which is the lowest since 2020*. As soybean growers evaluate 2024 performance and input decisions for 2025, return on investment (ROI) once again reigns supreme as a critical factor in a rollercoaster market. Soybean growers looking to squeeze more ROI from their soybeans may want to take a closer look at the correlation between cost of seed, seed treatment choice and emergence rates and their impact on ROI potential.

“The reason we use CruiserMaxx APX is when you try to plant soybeans earlier and earlier every year and you hit a cold damp spring, CruiserMaxx APX improves vigor and helps the plant get out of the ground and ahead of diseases,” said Luke Lauritsen, a soybean grower and seed dealer based in Arlington, Nebraska. “It'll just give the plant that extra boost to get it going and looking the best it can.” Lauritsen has been using both CruiserMaxx® APX and Saltro® seed treatments on his farm for several years and recommends both products to growers who purchase seeds from him.

When applying seed treatments like CruiserMaxx APX or Saltro, growers can expect stronger and healthier emergence with a lower risk of replants, healthier seedlings that thrive above and below ground, and higher potential yield and ROI. Not all soybean seed treatments are created equal; the Syngenta Seedcare portfolio delivers more value and more potential yield at harvest.

“Obviously, growers know the varieties they choose, planting dates and populations all impact performance and ROI,” said Dale Ireland, Ph.D., Syngenta technical product lead. “What they may not have considered is the impact of their seed treatment choice on emergence rates. We’re seeing substantially stronger emergence rates with CruiserMaxx APX-treated soybeans. Remember, when you use CruiserMaxx APX, you get more plants, more uniformity and more yield potential.”

Beyond the loss of the value of the seed because it never emerges, costs associated with replants can really take a bite out of ROI. Depending on the date, replants can cause potential yield losses of 8%-12% on average.* Quality seed treatments save you time. During planting time, hours are limited; you surely don't have enough time to replant fields where lesser, cheaper seed treatments were used.

“CruiserMaxx APX and Saltro provide growers with the confidence and protection to plant whenever they want without the fear of replanting because they know their soybeans are going to emerge with less stress and will reach their full genetic yield potential,” says Katie Jaeger, Syngenta product lead.
