TASAI is implementing the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) II project as part of the TAAT Policy Compact which is led by the Africa Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF). Under the project, TASAI intends to conduct seed sector assessment studies and contribute to the development of Seed Roadmaps in several countries including Cameroun.
The TAAT commodity compacts, in collaboration with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Cameroun office, the Institute for Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD), and AATF, convened the Cameroun Seed Roadmap workshop in Yaoundé, Cameroun from 28th to 29th May 2024. The workshop was held at the IITA campus in Yaoundé. The commodity compacts include Alliance for Bioversity CIAT (high iron bean), AATF (maize), World Vegetable Centre (vegetables), IITA (soya bean and cassava), Africa Rice (rice), and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) (wheat).
The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Francis Ngombe, Director of Research, and Deputy Director General of IRAD, and included opening remarks from Dr. Charles Nying Shey, the Director, Department of Regulation and Quality Control, and Dr. Komi Fiaboe, the Country Representative for IITA Cameroun. In addition, there were presentations from the Ministry of Agriculture (MINADER), IRAD, seed companies and the farmer organizations represented by Concertation Nationale des Organisations Paysannes au Cameroun (CNOP- CAM). During the workshop, TASAI introduced the Cameroun Seed Sector Assessment study, which will be conducted following the TASAI methodology. The content of the presentation included a brief explanation of the scope and methodology to be used, and highlights of seed industry data from other countries. The objective of the presentation was to introduce the TASAI Cameroun country study to the stakeholders to get their buy-in, into the exercise.
The Cameroun country study is expected to commence at the start of June. The target is to produce a draft report by the end of November for discussion during a stakeholder dissemination workshop in Yaoundé before the end of the year.
