Cimbria completes new top-of-the-line seed and food processing plant for Saatbau in Pöttelsdorf, Austria

May 13, 2024

Recently, Cimbria has completed a remarkable turnkey project for Saatbau in Pöttelsdorf, Austria. For over four decades, Cimbria has cultivated a strong partnership with Saatbau, one of Austria's prominent players within the seed industry. Saatbau, a cooperative owned by over 3,000 farmers, is renowned for its expertise in developing customized seed varieties that thrive in Austria's unique climatic and agricultural conditions. The cooperative aims to provide high-quality seeds to its farmer’s partners, optimizing crop yields while ensuring a sustainable production. Cimbria’s latest turnkey project, the Pöttelsdorf seed and food processing plant, represent a significant milestone in this enduring collaboration.

Focus on Legumes and Nutrition

The Pöttelsdorf plant, designed as a turnkey seed and food processing facility, primarily specializes in legumes, with a particular emphasis on soybeans for human consumption. Soybeans have gained increasing importance in Austria as a vital nutritional source, particularly protein, and are widely used in food products as a vegan meat substitute. In addition to soybeans, the plant processes other food crops such as wheat, and other ancient varieties like spelt or buckwheat, expanding its portfolio to meet evolving market demands.

Gentle Handling of Soybeans

Soybeans require careful handling due to their inherent tendency to split into two parts. The Cimbria equipment ensures the gentle treatment of these delicate seeds throughout all the processing stages. Every step, from cleaning to conveying and storage, is meticulously executed with precision and care to minimize the splitting of the beans. This attention to detail guarantees that the soybeans retain their integrity, producing a high-quality end product.

Efficient Cleaning Processes: Ensuring strict separation between different crop varieties is essential, particularly when processing gluten-free products. The Pöttelsdorf plant excels in efficient cleaning, implementing comprehensive cleaning protocols that eliminate any residue of previous batches. The entire facility is designed for easy cleaning, efficiently preventing cross-contamination.

The pendulum bucket elevators and the belt conveyors are purpose-built to operate with utmost cleanliness. The pendulum bucket elevator features separate buckets that enable complete emptying, ensuring the equipment remains completely clean throughout operations. Additionally, the belt conveyor is specifically designed to prevent seeds from adhering to its surface, maintaining the optimal hygienic environment.

Enhanced Air Quality and Improved Energy Efficiency

The Pöttelsdorf plant integrates an advanced aspiration system engineered by Cimbria. Each machine is connected to a central filter-system, ensuring clean and consistently refreshed air within the building and the workspace. During winter, the plant recycles internal air to maintain optimal temperatures and conserve energy, while in summertime, the system expels the air outside to prevent increased indoor temperatures and discourage insect proliferation. This innovative approach to air management contributes to a healthier and more comfortable processing environment.

Sustainability Commitment

Both Cimbria and Saatbau place strong emphasis on sustainability. The plant exemplifies this commitment through various energy-saving measures. Cimbria has installed low-energy-consuming engines, minimizing the plant's overall energy consumption. Saatbau has taken additional steps by covering the entire roof with photovoltaic panels, harnessing solar power, and incorporating ample windows to maximize natural light not only reducing energy usage but also enhancing the overall comfort and well-being for the plant's employees.
