American Seed Trade Association applauds New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s leadership on Birds and Bees Protection Act

Alexandria, Virginia, USA
January 3, 2024

Andy Lavigne, President & CEO of the American Seed Trade Association, issued the following statement after New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an amended version of S1856-A/A7460, the “Birds and Bees Protection Act."  Even though the legislation overrides existing EPA regulations, as amended, it establishes a process to continue to allow New York farmers access to vital management tools critical for food production in the state.

“The American Seed Trade Association applauds New York Governor Kathy Hochul for seeking feedback from agriculture stakeholders and amending the “Birds and Bees Protection Act” (S1856-A/A7460). The amended legislation signed into law recognizes that treated seeds are an integral part of a 21st century farm operation, supporting growers’ and farmers’ goals toward high yields and a more sustainable pest management approach through targeted treatment, lessening the impact on pollinators and other friendly insects. In coordination with our grower partners the benefits of modern treated seed were communicated to Governor Hochul and her administration through science-based advocacy. We look forward to continuing to work with her to ensure New York growers have access to the resources and tools needed to continue growing a bountiful harvest that feeds families across the country.”
