Horizon Ag's PVL03: The proof is in its performance

USA
October 21, 2021

With another strong performance year under its belt and high-yielding new PVL03 expected to be in good supply for 2022, farmers know they can rely on the Provisia® Rice System as the best and most proven technology to control weedy hybrid rice, resistant red rice, and grasses.

They’ve seen the system and Provisia herbicide do a number on damaging weeds and grasses, and consistently give the Provisia Rice System credit for resulting in the cleanest fields on their farm, year after year. They’ve also been able to effectively turn around production in fields where weedy hybrid rice and resistance issues were seriously threatening their ability to produce rice profitably, significantly lowering yield potential and quality.

Now, as other rice seed companies prepare to roll out “similar” technologies in a late-to-the-game effort to enter the market, consider these key points as you decide what rice seed and technology provides you the best opportunity to maximize your profitability for the 2022 season.

  • PVL03 in the Provisia Rice System is Proven to Perform. Farmers know the importance of using products that have proven consistency in their area. The Provisia Rice System was launched in 2018 and, since that time, has been used effectively on thousands of rice acres in the South to bring relief from production losses due to the weedy hybrid rice complex. New PVL03 is the third and highest-yielding Provisia variety released for the Provisia Rice System. It has excellent stalk strength and a superior package quality milled rice. Those features and benefits have been proven by independent researchers in multi-year trials and in seed production plots on actual farms. Be wary of cherry-picked yield numbers by other companies that can’t back up their claims with real, comparable data.

Outstanding Yield Potential. PVL03 has proven yield potential rivaling and even exceeding that of other top-performing rice lines. Louisiana trials in 2019 and 2020 showed PVL03 yielding almost 8,500 pounds per acre, outyielding Cheniere and putting it on par with top-yielding Clearfield varieties like CL153.

  • Industry-Leading Disease Resistance. PVL03 doesn’t take a back seat to any variety when it comes to its disease package, and particularly the resistance it provides to serious threats like blast and Cercospora — two of the biggest challenges rice farmers can face during the growing season. It’s protection you can bank on and is a major reason farmers see PVL03 as a game-changing variety for the region.
  • Why Be Gentle with Unwanted Weeds? Other herbicide technology systems will require a safener. The safener should mean the herbicide is easier on the rice, but can also mean it’s easier on undesirable weeds and grasses. When it comes to weedy hybrid rice and resistant red rice and grasses, farmers need to show no mercy and effectively kill these costly threats. Provisia herbicide has proven its effectiveness. It doesn’t need a safener. Weeds and grasses get the brunt of Provisia’s outstanding control. Finally, products that are milder on weeds have been known to allow escapes that can lead to the development of resistance. That’s a risk farmers can’t afford.
  • Dollars and Cents Make Sense. With PVL03 and the Provisia Rice System, you get a top-performing variety at a significantly lower seed cost than the competition. Although some competitors use cherry-picked yield data to try to offset the advantage of a lower seed cost with PVL03, the truth is that PVL03 will consistently set up farmers to be more profitable, combining great yield potential and milling quality that is proven, not just promised.

  • Protection for Years to Come. One advantage farmers have with PVL03 is they are able to implement a rotation program that gives them the flexibility to grow more rice over multiple seasons while rotating different herbicide modes of action for sustainable management of all resistant rice types and annual grasses. A 4-year rotation system of soybeans, the Provisia rice system, conventional rice, and the Clearfield® Production System for rice is recommended. This way, rice farmers will have effective weed control tools to manage for better profitability for years to come.

We look forward to sharing actual farmer experiences and results from PVL03 with you as you prepare for the 2022 season on our website and on social media. We also encourage you to speak to your Horizon Ag Field Representative to get the real facts on why PVL03 and the Provisia Rice System is the proven choice for your farm.
